How to become a Realtor in Wisconsin

Becoming a Realtor in Wisconsin requires obtaining a real estate license issued from the state. The real estate license is obtained by attending real estate classes for a designated number of hours and passing the state exam for Wisconsin Realtors. The exam can be taken numerous times, but a real estate license will not be issued until the exam has been passed. All Wisconsin Realtors are required to take continuing education courses once they are licensed.

  1. Attend 72 hours of pre-licensing education courses in Wisconsin. Classes are held in a number of education centers located throughout Wisconsin, which can be found on the Wisconsin Realtors Association website. As of 2010, the pre-license course costs was approximately $325 per person.
  2. Complete the 72 hour pre-licensing course with a passing grade before you sign up to take the Wisconsin state license exam, given by Pearson VUE Examination Services. As of 2010, the exam costs approximately $79.
  3. Register for the exam by contacting an employee at Any person attempting to obtain a Wisconsin real estate license must prove they are a United States resident prior to taking the licensing exam. Acceptable proof of citizenship includes a birth certificate, US passport, Naturalization Certificate or Certificate of Citizenship.
